|
Posted October 16, 2006
Colorado Ski Season Opens A-Basin wins the trophy for the first ski area to
open for the 2006-07 ski season. A-Basin is of course Arapahoe Basin
Ski Area which is located at the western side of the continental
divide at the base of Loveland Pass. Due to both it's very high
altitude and it's snowmaking equipment A-Basin opened one run on
Friday October 13.

The Loveland Basin Ski is normally the Colorado Ski Area that opens
first but not this year. Alan Henceroth the general manager of the
area said, "we have wanted this title for a long time andwe are excited that it has finally come to fruition."
"Our entire team has put in tremendous effort to make this happen and
they can all be proud."
“This
was a race up until the very last hour,” explained Rob Perlman,
President & CEO of Colorado Ski Country USA. “The fact that Arapahoe
Basin is the first resort in North America to open is a true testament
to how far a little competitive spirit and a whole lot of determination
will get you.” |
| The first skiers and snowboarders to arrive
found that the High Noon Run was open. This intermediate run has a 1200
foot vertical run and access to the terrain park which the snowboarders
love. The terrain park offered the Hi-Divide run area. All visitors were
warned before they started that this was early season conditions that
offered only 18" of man made snow.
This is Arapahoe Basins 60th anniversary and being first to open will
make this season a great one to remember. Last year Colorado's 26 ski
areas set a
record as they entertained 12.53 million skier visits. This makes Colorado
the most visited ski state in the United States.
“To see such a strong growth trend for the nation demonstrates the
vibrancy of the overall industry and certainly bodes well for skiing in
Colorado,” said Rob Perlman. “With two back-to-back years of solid
growth in the state, momentum is in our favor. We think the next decade
has the potential to be Colorado’s best. The resorts continue to set
the gold standard in the industry in terms of overall experience – great
snow, superior service and the world’s best facilities.” |

| The Loveland Ski Area the opening champion for the
last six years came in second and opened Saturday October 14. Loveland
also opened one run with a 1,000 foot vertical run from top to bottom
and they also opened one of their terrain parks.
Cooper Mountain will be the first major ski resort to open and
present plans are for a November 3 date. Copper will have an opening
day celebration the weekend of October 3-5. Included in the
celebration will be live music, early demonstrations from the top ski
manufactures and parties galore. See Our Ski Pages

I f
early season snowfall is any indicator of the coming winter season,
Colorado is headed for a banner year. The snowstorm earlier this week
dropped as much as a foot of powder on the San Juan Mountains.
Employees at both Silverton and Wolf Creek were greeted by up to ten
inches of snow earlier this week.
